Tachikawa Ki-9

キ9九五式一型练习机 - Kyūgo-shiki ichigata renshuki - "Army Continuation Training Aircraft Type 95"

Allied reporting name: "Spruce"

History and use:
In 1933, the 立川飛行機株式会社 - Tachikawa Hikōki Kabushiki Kaisha (hereafter referred to as Tachikawa) attempted the independent design of the R-5 trainer for basic training. The Army Air Force did not show interest in this aircraft. Tachikawa was advised to cooperate with the Tokorozawa Aviation School. In April 1934, as a result of this cooperation, an order for the construction of a trainer aircraft was given to Tachikawa. The new aircraft was to be capable of providing both basic and advanced training, this was to be made possible by simply changing the powerplant.

The designer, engineer Roykichi Endo, began work on the project, designated Ki-9, but already at the design stage he warned of possible problems with the aircraft's center of gravity. It was necessary to take into account the different weights of the two engines, so that one aircraft would have its centre of gravity at the front and the other at the rear. However, the Army Air Force insisted on the original order and so the first Ki-9 prototype was flown on 7 January 1935 with equipment for continued training. The first take-off was not at all satisfactory, the unbalance, stiff undercarriage and large steering forces were features that had to be eliminated, this was done by the designers and engineers within two days. The first two prototypes were flown with Hitachi Ha-13a engines of 350 horsepower, the equipment of the aircraft corresponded to a trainer aircraft for continuing training, among other things it carried equipment for practicing flights in zero visibility. The flight characteristics were good and both prototypes passed the tests well. The problem arose with the third prototype, which was lightened and powered by a Gasuden Jimpu 6 engine, which had 150 hp and less weight. This prototype was intended to be a basic training design, but here the designers' concerns about the unbalance of the machine really came to the fore. Reportedly, this aircraft was almost impossible to get off the ground. The results of the flight school tests recommended accepting the Ki-9 with the Hitachi Ha-13a engine into service and rejecting the Ki-9 with the Gasuden Jimpu 6 engine.

Based on this recommendation, the Army Air Forces accepted the Ki-9 into service in 1935 with the designation "Continuing Type 95 Model 1 Trainer", and the Tachikawa Ki 17 Cedar was later accepted for basic training. Production continued throughout the war, and in addition to the parent factory, the small Tokyo Koku K factory was also involved in Ki-9 production. K., where 220 aircraft were produced.

The Ki-9 trainer flew in many training schools and was given the code name Spruce after its discovery by intelligence. The aircraft was slightly modified in 1937, with the engine moved slightly to the rear and the undercarriage made more robust to absorb insensitive landings by trainees. The new aircraft was designated as the Ki-9Kai.
Several dozen aircraft served primarily on the Chinese battlefield as courier and liaison aircraft.
The Ki-9 aircraft were also used by the air forces of the satellite states of Manchukuo, Thailand and Konchigchina. Here they were used primarily as couriers. After the war they were in the armament of Indonesia and served there until the late 1950s.
