Renault VBC 90 (Véhicule blindé à Canon de 90 mm)

The Renault VBC 90 is a wheeled armoured vehicle designed for military reconnaissance.

The vehicle was developed in the second half of the 1970s primarily for export purposes. The chassis of the Renault VBC 90 is directly based on the chassis of the VAB.

The first prototype left the factory in 1979. Serial vehicles were delivered to the French army from 1981. The French Gendarmerie received the first of 28 vehicles ordered in 1983. These machines were additionally equipped with the SOPTAC 11 fire control system with laser rangefinder.

The only foreign customer was Oman, whose armed forces operate 9 VBC 90 vehicles (as of 1999).

The Renault VBC 90 is otherwise of classic concept. The driver sits in the left front section of the hull, with a two-seat TS-90 turret in the middle of the vehicle, which houses a Cockerill 90 mm gun. It is coupled with a 7.62 mm NF1 machine gun. The ammunition is carried in the rear of the turret, which is supplied by GIAT and is also used on the Panhard ERC 90 F4 Sagaie. Passive protection is provided by two pairs of smoke grenade launchers mounted on the rear of the turret.

The engine-gear compartment is thus in the rear of the hull. The power unit is a water-cooled Renault MIDS.06.20.45 with a maximum output of 220 hp at 2,300 rpm. The standard equipment of the vehicle is a 6t winch at the front of the hull.
