CZK - URG-86

Universal hand grenade vz. 86 (URG-86)

It is an offensive and defensive hand grenade designed to increase the striking force of a soldier in combat in open terrain, trenches, shelters, etc.

The lighter is activated at the moment of release from the hand when throwing. The grenade explodes on impact with an obstacle immediately, or 3.2 to 4.6 seconds after the lighter is activated.

They act on the enemy's manpower with a large number of small fragments, but their effect decreases rapidly with increasing distance from the explosion site.

Position of the components of the igniter of the secured grenade

Before throwing the Model 86 hand grenade, the individual components of the igniter are in this position:

the firing pin is held in the tensioned position by the throwing safety lever, which is secured by the transport safety pin, the ends of which are spaced apart

the striking mechanism of the igniter (upper and lower inertia firing pins) is in the position, i.e. their mutual movement is prevented by the spacer pin and the safety pin, which is held in that position by the adjusting lever.

The igniter of the ZK is in the tensioned position at all times and therefore any disassembly for the purpose of checking the mechanical or pyrotechnical system is strictly prohibited.

Position of the components and operation of the fuze of an armed grenade

The operation of the igniter described below occurs when the striker is in the horizontal position, i.e. set for impact initiation and can be displaced by the action of the spring.

Pulling the bolt by the ring of the transport safety disarms the firing pin. As long as the firing pin continues to be pressed against the grenade body, the grenade remains locked. As the firing pin is released and thus dislodged, the tensioned firing pin, by the action of the spring, runs under the projection of the firing pin and strikes the edge of the primer, initiating it.

The flame of the match is ignited by the retardant.

At the same time, when the firing pin is deflected, the spring action will cause the firing pin and striker to move out of the body of the igniter. After the safety pin is extended, the upper and lower inertia strikers are only secured against possible mutual displacement by the spacer pin, which rests on the pyrotechnic fuse via the damping insert. This prevents accidental striking of the fuse, e.g. when the grenade falls from the hand, until the delay and the pyrotechnic fuse have completely burnt out, which is within 1.2 to 2 s from the moment of initiation of the fuse.

After the delay device burns out, the ignition of the delay device occurs, and the burning continues.

If the safety pin has been removed from the igniter, the striking mechanism is fully armed after the delay and pyrotechnic fuse have burned out.

When the grenade is impacted in any position, due to inertial forces, the two firing pins move against each other, the firing pin pricks the fuse because the firing pin can enter the free space after the pyrotechnic fuse has burned out and no longer prevents the two firing pins from moving against each other.

The flame of the fuse pierces the cap and initiates the detonator, from which the initiation of the bursting charge and the explosion of the grenade occurs.

However, the ZK fuze is also equipped with a time initiation of the bursting charge. This occurs when the blast initiation function of the igniter is disabled by moving the set lever downwards, locking this lever in the body of the igniter. When the throw safety is released, the safety pin will then not be pushed out of engagement with the upper inertia striker. Thus, the upper and lower inertia firing pins remain locked even after the pyrotechnic safety has burned out and the grenade will detonate due to the time initiation of the fuze.

The time initiation of the bursting charge occurs after the delay fuze has completely burned out, when the needle firing pin is ejected by the delay fuze amplification charge, which initiates the ignition. The initiation of the fuze causes the grenade to explode in the same manner as the impact initiation.

The total time of operation of the time initiation of the grenade is determined by the burn time of both delayers and ranges from 3.2 to 4.6s.

Reduced universal hand grenade vz.86 ( URG-86-Rd) is designed for training in the use of grenades in troops.

Its construction corresponds to a grenade for combat use.

In terms of performance, the effect of this training grenade is significantly reduced. The explosive charge is replaced by an inert substance. Only the power of the detonator is used to detonate the grenade.

The same rules apply to the use of the reduced URG-86-Rd as for the sharp URG-86.

Distinction from sharp URG-86:

The ZK lighter has a green body color because it is a normal sharp lighter.

The body of the grenade is black. Instead of a plastic burst charge, an inert substance is used in the cavity of the shard insert.

The shard insert is the same as for a sharp grenade.
