Alfred Schlemm was born on December 18, 1894 in Rudolstadt, Thuringia. In March 1913 he joined the 2nd Poznan Field Artillery Regiment No. 56 as an ensign junker. From October 1913 to June 1914 he attended the War School in Gdansk, after which he was promoted to lieutenant. During the First World War, he served as a platoon commander, ordinance officer, battery commander and regimental aide on the Western and Eastern Fronts. In September 1917 he was promoted to lieutenant.
After the war he was taken over by the Imperial Armed Forces. He was first deployed to the Imperial Armed Forces Brigade 5, which operated on the eastern border of Germany. After the reduction of the army, he transferred to the 3rd (Prussian) Artillery Regiment and in 1921 completed an auxiliary command course. He married in the same year. He later gave birth to a son. From October 1922 to September 1924 he was platoon commander of the 3rd Artillery Regiment. On June 1, 1925, he was promoted to captain and assigned to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, where he first trained in department T4 and the following year was transferred to department T1. From March 1930 to September 1932 he was commander of the battery of the 3rd Artillery Regiment. He then worked in the department's ground forces training department. In June 1934 he was promoted to the rank of major.
From October 1934 he was the chief of staff of the commander in the Armed Forces III, continued in the same position even after renaming to III. Army Corps. On August 1, 1935 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In October 1936, Schlemm joined the Armed Forces Academy for a year. He then worked at the Imperial Ministry of the Air Force. On February 1, 1938 he was promoted to colonel and transferred from the ground forces to the Air Force. On June 1, 1938, he became Chief of Staff of the West Air Defense Zone, then from October 1939 he held the position of Chief of Staff Air County XI. In June 1940 he was promoted to major general and in December he was appointed chief of staff XI. Air Corps, whose commander was General Kurt Student and fell below him German airborne troops. In this capacity, he prepared plans for Operation Mercury - an attack on Crete. From February to May 1942 he was deployed on the Eastern Front at the head of Schlemm's fighting alliance. On June 1, 1942 he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed commander 1. aviation division. In October of the same year he was promoted when he became commander II. air force field corps. He was deployed in the operating space 9. armády and 3. tank army on the Eastern Front. In January 1943 he was promoted to Air Force General. In November 1943, the corps was withdrawn from the Eastern Front and moved to Italy, where it was renamed I. airborne corps. In Italy, the Corps engaged in heavy defensive battles with the advancing Allies. Schlemm was awarded the Knight's Cross .
In November 1944, Schlemm, now in the rank of airborne general, moved to Western Europe, taking command 1. airborne army, with which he underwent deployment to Waal and in the northern part of the left bank of the Rhine. Here he fought hard with 1. by the Canadian army, which forced him to withdraw to the right bank.Just before 21. a group of armies as part of Operation PLUNDER crossed the Rhine, Schlemm was wounded in the raid, hospitalized and transferred to the leader's reserve. By the end of the war, he had not held any command post. From May 1945 to March 1948 he was held in British captivity. After his release, he lived at the family residence in Ahlten and devoted himself to, among other things, publishing activities.
