The Soviet side's view of the death of this German superman is published on the page mentioned in the source.

According to it, on 30.08.1944, Soviet fighter pilot Nikolai Pasko of 28. Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, a Fieseler Fi-156 Storch type communications and reconnaissance machine, in which General der Infanterie Paul Laux was flying on a battlefield reconnaissance mission, together with his personal pilot, as well as his staff officer, Colonel Kurt Hartmann. The Soviet pilot was piloting an American Bell P-39 Airacobra, delivered to the Soviet Union under a Lend-Lease contract.

A senior lieutenant himself, Pasko, like his comrades in arms, did not consider the downing of the slow-moving liaison machine something to brag about. Either way, however, it was an enemy machine that had been shot down. That was one of the reasons why this shoot-down appeared in the proposal for his decoration. Though in doing so, no one had any idea how important a commander had fallen victim to his precision gunfire.

The German machine landed with a burning engine after the Soviet fighter attack. Colonel Hartmann died already in the air, hit by Soviet fighter fire, General der Infanterie Paul Laux was also hit by fire and died of his wounds on 2 September 1944 in a hospital in Riga. The only survivor of the attack was the pilot, whose name has not yet been identified.
