Karel Emanuel I. se narodil 12. ledna 1562 a ve svých osmnácti letech se stal savojským vévodou. Jako fanatický katolík se zapojil na straně Španělska do války s Francií a v roce 1588 uchvátil markrabství Saluzzo.
