Brig. Gen. Stanislaw Sosabowski, commander of 1st Independent Polish Paratroopers Brigade

(1892 - 1967)

He was born on 8 May 1892 to a railwayman family in the Austrian occupation of Poland. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Economics in Kraków. At that time his father died and Stanislaw had to interrupt his studies to take care of his mother and four siblings. While still in high school, he became a member and later commander of the Rifle Company, and also organized a secret patriotic association, which he led until 1913, when he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army.

At the beginning of World War I he joined the 58th Infantry Regiment as a corporal and underwent his baptism of fire at Přemyšl. He took part in the fighting at the Dukla Pass, the breakthrough of the front at Gorlice and the offensive between Lublašiní and Brest. In the middle of 1915 he was st. Sergeant Sosabowski was severely wounded at the Leszno River. He stayed in Lublin until November 1918 after his recovery. After the war, he volunteered for the forming Polish Army, attaining the rank of major, but because his wounded leg was not yet fully healed, he was unable to participate in the Polish-Soviet War.

In 1922, he began studying at the Military College and then worked in administration at the General Staff. In 1928 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and his health allowed him to return to combat units. He first commanded a battalion, then was deputy commander of the 3rd Infantry Regiment in Bielsko-Biała. Then, in 1930, he returned to the Military College to teach logistics. He was very popular among the students.

After the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, he commanded troops at Modlin and in the defense of the capital Warsaw. He was awarded the Virtuti Militari for his courage and demonstrated military skill on the day of the surrender of Warsaw - 29 September 1939. During the occupation he was involved in the work of resistance organizations on Polish territory. He was sent to Paris as a special courier with false documents under the name of Emil Helm. In Warsaw he left his wife and son Stanislaw, a medical student. Through Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, he eventually reached England, as France capitulated on 18 July 1940. Here he learned of the formation of the 4th "Canadian" Infantry Brigade from Polish volunteers and accepted the rank of colonel as its commander.

In 1942 he became commander of the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade. In the autumn of 1943, the British General Staff offered him the post of Commander of the British-Polish Division at the rank of Brigadier-General, but he declined. After the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, he wanted to come with his brigade to help the defenders of the city, but this plan proved unrealistic given the situation on the fronts. He was promoted to brigadier general on August 15, and his brigade was included in the line-up of units ready to carry out Operation Market Garden - the landings at Arnhem. The operation began on 17 September, the Polish brigade was due to join on 21 September but was delayed by bad weather. When Sosnowski's men were finally dropped on 25 September, the main body of the British force at Arnhem was surrounded and the Polish paratroopers were dropped into enemy positions where they were massacred. After the disaster at Arnhem, for which General Sosabowski bore not the slightest blame, he was appointed Inspector of Auxiliary and Guard Troops.

In 1948, Gen. Sosabowski was demobilized. By that time his wife and son were already in London with him, as Sosabowski had been stripped of his citizenship in Poland, along with 76 other officers fighting in the West.
For the next 19 years he worked near London as a common labourer. He died on 25 September 1967.

In 1969, the urn containing his ashes was taken to Poland, where, according to his will, it was laid to rest in a military cemetery in Warsaw.
