The M 989 A1 HEMAT (Heavy Expandable Ammunition Trailer) is a double-axle trailer, designed mainly to transport containers for the M270 MLRS rocket launcher, behind the M985 HEMTT series truck, but also other cargo such as other palletized ammunition, fuel tanks, etc.
It can be used to transport loads on paved and unpaved roads or off-road.
The payload is 11 tonnes. Both the M985 towing vehicle and this trailer can carry up to 4 containers for MLRS, i.e. 24 missiles. The basic version of the M989 is limited to carrying only two missile launchers in peacetime conditions, the upgraded version M989A1 does not have this limitation.
