Interestingly, this car, often presented as a symbol of socialist construction, has its origins in a German request for a truck for the German army on the Eastern Front. Originally intended to be a vehicle made from non-defective raw materials, the frame of the "Stood Eleven" is made of ordinary steel, there are almost no non-ferrous metals, and the original cab was made of spare materials (mainly fibre). The car is based on the older Tatra 81 and a new engine, an air-cooled diesel, was developed for it at the customer's request. Cooling is forced by two fans, originally driven by chains, then by V-belts on later (post-war) models. For the Germans, a car with a payload of 6.5 tons was first produced, later the payload was increased to 8 tons by changing the pens and their mounting, cars with a higher payload can be recognized by the larger wheels.


The wartime cars did not have high reliability, another problem was the high noise level of the engine caused mainly by the fans and their drives. After the war, production started as early as 1945, and for post-war production the payload was further increased to ten tons. Reliability was improved by reducing engine power and speed and by making post-war production much more careful. The post-war Tatra 111s, on the other hand, were distinguished from their predecessors by their reliability, which even led to the erection of a monument to them in the Siberian town of Bereg.


After the war, the emergency wartime driver's box was also replaced by a new cab with a wooden frame covered with sheet metal. The cab was developed in 1943 and provided a better view from the car, I have not been able to confirm its use during the war except in prototypes. Later, the Standing Eleven received a new all-metal cab originally designed for the Tatra 128. It is a typical cab with a negative slope of the windows (supposedly to prevent light from reflecting in them and to prevent the car from giving itself away to the enemy). The vehicle was supplied to our army, where it served quite reliably for many years, and the last pieces from NZ stocks were retired only in the 1980s. Some special bodies (cranes or diggers) were rarely seen as late as the 1990s, usually by construction companies. A total of 33,690 units of all versions were produced. Many were exported to 59 countries, most to the USSR, where 7,300 units were delivered between 1956 and 1962.
