During the production of the Sturmpanzer Ausf.I assault guns, the need for armoured ammunition vehicles arose. Several vehicles were made from remanufactured Pz.Kpfw.IV tanks. After the delivery of the first 60 assault guns Sturmpanzer Ausf.I in 5/1943, six converted Pz.Kpfw.IV older versions were also delivered. There are factory shots of the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.D conversion (Fgst.Nr.80655 - originally produced in 1/1940). The tank was stripped of the turret and the orbiter was covered by a rotating metal cover with a pair of hatches (quarter-circles). Underneath the cover were ammunition boxes for 15 cm calibre ammunition intended for 15 cm Sturmhaubitz 43. The old tank had its chassis modified to the latest standards, had new grilles over the engine compartment, schurzens, etc. The tank was painted with the then standard camouflage paint (sand yellow), was complete with tools and a set of spare running wheels. Six of these ammunition tanks fell into the status of Sturm-Panzer-Abteilung 216 as of 7/1943. A conversion of the newer Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G tank with bolt-on additional frontal armour was also in this unit's status.
