Syn Edvarda I. Staršího a Elfledy, narozen ve Wessexu. Podle Anglosaské kroniky byl králem Edvardem I. uznán jako jeho následovník.
Pravděpodobnější verze je zřejmě ale ta, že se stal poustevníkem v Bridgnorthu a byl zvolen za krále Witanem (z Witenagemot = shromáždění moudrých) až po otcově smrti. Byl však králem pouhých 16 dní, když zemřel v Oxfordu. Objevily se i dohady, že byl zavražděn na příkaz svého nevlastního bratra Athelstana, který se ujal vlády po jeho smrti. Byl pohřben ve Winchesterské katedrále.
