Service in the Royal Navy

The third son of King George III was destined for military service. At the age of thirteen he was enlisted in the Royal Navy and in 1780 took part in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent between the British and the Spanish as part of the American War of Independence. The engagement ended in a British victory. William also fought on the American continent (e.g. around New York).

In 1785 he was promoted to the rank of naval lieutenant and a year later became commander of HMS Pegasus. His ship subsequently served under Nelson's command in the West Indies. The two men became close friends. Rapid promotions followed and by 1789 William already held the rank of Rear Admiral and commanded HMS Valiant.

On 16 May 1789, William received the title Duke of Clarence and St Andrews and Earl of Munster. The following year William was withdrawn from active service and became involved in politics. After the outbreak of war with Napoleon, he tried to return to active service. For a number of reasons (e.g. health problems, but also his anti-war stance) he was unable to do so. Afterwards, William changed his attitude towards the war, but he was still not granted a command. In 1811 he was awarded the honorary rank of Grand Admiral. In 1813 he visited British troops in the Netherlands, and was present at the siege of Antwerp, among other things. Here his post became the target of fire and one bullet pierced his coat.

He subsequently became increasingly involved in politics. On the death of his brothers, he became king of the United Kingdom on 26 June 1830, and at the age of 64 the oldest person ever to hold the kingship in Britain.
