For the needs of new anti-tank units (Batteries divisionnaires antichars) armed with a new 47 mm anti-tank cannon model 1937, there was a requirement for an artillery tractor designed to tow this cannon. The competition was announced on October 1, 1937. A maximum speed of 50 km/h was required, a maximum height of 1.3 meters, the vehicle was to carry 6 crew members, 40 rounds and tighten the cannon, which weighed 1,055 kg. The total weight of the vehicle should be up to 4 tons. In the spring of 1938, it was evaluated that the established artillery tractor Lorraine 37L is not suitable for this task. The Laffly W 15 T wheeled tractor, Latil M7 Z1, FAR TT 3 and the Somua MCJ semi-tracked tractor took part in the competition. The Somua MCJ was based on the Somua MCG semi-track tractors. The Somua M 8 engine was used. In 1939, the prototype was presented and tested in Vincennes, then this type was approved for production. By the end of 1940, it was planned to deliver 278 vehicles, with the vision of maintaining production of this type in 1941. However, priority in large-scale production was given to the competing Laffly W 15 T and Somua MCJ was produced in only one prototype.
