The German terminology for the second world war, distinguished two basic types:
- Panzerjäger = anti-tank gun placed on the crawler chassis, complemented by a light shield; literally a tank destroyer
- Jagdpanzer = anti-tank gun fitted to a tracked vehicle in bezvěžovém kasematním execution; literally fighter tank

In English we translate both as td, respectively, in the names of the units as tds, the English always like a Tank Destroyer.


In the role of tank destroyers very often acted assault cannon (Sturmgeschütz, engl. Assault Gun)..

In the Red army during the second world war, there were fighter anti-tank artillery units, e.g.:
fighter anti-tank artillery regiment / истребительно-противотанковый артиллерийский полк / Tank Destroyer Artillery Regiment.
