This self-propelled gun was based on the design and lessons learned in the development of the T-100 heavy tank, which was under development in the late 1930s. With the knowledge that the T-100 tank concept was outdated and flawed, the decision was made to use as many components from the T-100 program as possible and develop a self-propelled gun that would be capable of effectively attacking the enemy's fortified points of defense (bunkers). The vehicle received the designation T-100U, later SU-100U. Completely changed from the T-100 was the upper hull and running gear, where the leaf spring suspension was replaced by a modern torsion spring. On the chassis thus modified, a fully enclosed box superstructure of armoured plates was created. The prototype was completed by 14.3.1940. However, the type did not go into series production. It was found to have high stresses on the parts, which resulted in high failure rates and the impossibility of towing such a heavy machine to the rear of the field workshops, due to the lack of suitable recovery vehicles. At the same time, the machine was very expensive, had a high fuel consumption and, last but not least, the attitude of important army officials towards self-propelled artillery, noticeable in most similar projects, played a role in the rejection. Thus, only one example of this machine was built, but it saw combat service during the fighting at Moscow, where it took part in the shelling of German troops along with SU-14. The machine remained in service even longer, perhaps until the end of WWII, then was restored and now forms part of the museum collection at the famous Russian Tank Museum in Kubinka near Moscow.
