Prototype of Syrian rocket launcher on BMP chassis
Dear,
Recently, three photos of the Syrian conversion of the BMP-1 into a heavy self-propelled rocket launcher have appeared on the Facebook and syria.liveuamap websites. As the basic technical data are not known, I took the liberty of submitting my observations.
Estimated dimensions
- Vehicle length: 6735 mm,
- vehicle width: 2940 mm,
- height of the vehicle during transfer: probably 2100 mm,
- vehicle height in firing position: probably 4350 mm,
- ground clearance: 370 mm.
Armament
The calibre of the weapon is not specified, but can be assumed:
- 240 mm caliber missiles of Russian (BM24) or Iranian origin (Falagh-1),
- 220 mm calibre missiles of Russian origin modified or taken from heavy rocket launchers TOS.
There have been speculations on the internet about the type of warhead. Some sources claim that it is a conventional three-shot or three-burst warhead, while others suggest the use of a container warhead with anti-personnel submunitions. It has also been suspected that this is a Syrian version of the TOS missile with a warhead containing thermobaric explosives.
