During a firefighting operation in the Irkutsk region, contact was lost with the Il-76TD RA-76840 "Nikolai Kamanin" (Николай Каманин) machine of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The machine took off from runway 12 in Irkutsk for a firefighting operation in a 75-kilometer area. Contact was lost at 10:54 local time, 16 minutes after take-off. The machine is believed to have crashed and the 10-strong crew perished. An extensive search is underway but is complicated by the rugged terrain.

The wreckage of the plane was found four kilometres south of the village of Rybnyj Ujan on the slope of one of the volcanoes. An investigation has been launched to clarify the causes of the disaster.
