The Cross of Honour of the North.

The cross could be awarded to soldiers of both the Finnish and German armies who served and fought on the territory of Finland (Karelia, Lapland and the Murmansk region, i.e. on disputed territories, which the Finns counted as their own territorial areas.

In total, three variants of this honour and commemorative cross were minted. The first two were intended for soldiers on the Northern Front and the third variant of the cross was linked to the fighting in Laplandia (Lapland).

On all types of the cross there is a medallion in the centre, which is white or black enamelled and surrounded by a gilded wreath. The central medallion shows the emblem of Finland, which is the Finnish lion. From the lion's coat of arms come the flags of Finland and Germany. The inscription on the central intercircle reads:

POHJOISRINTAMA -DIE NORDFRONT (Northern Front)

The inscription is in Finnish and German. On the flags is the year:

1941- 1942
1941- 1943
1941- 1944

The actual surface of the cross is enamelled blue (or black). The Finnish swastika is inserted between these enamelled arms and the names of the main battlefields are stamped on the arms of the cross (swastika). The cross was worn on the chest pocket of the uniform. It was fastened with a bolt and nut, or the rarer clasp.

Remark:
Lapland is a county or province of Finland, located in the north of the country. It is inhabited by the indigenous Sami people. However, in the final stages of the fighting, the German army units commanded by General Lothar Rendulic fought hard among themselves(General Dietl died in a plane crash).

The Finnish troops were commanded by the able Hjalmar Siilasvuo, who fought bravely with his troops. However, the ending was disastrous for the Finns and the scorched earth tactics carried out by General Lothar Rendulic on Hitler's direct orders meant that this cross, which was supposed to be a symbol of friendship and cooperation of both the army and the nation, did not enjoy any attention in Finland. The Battle of Tornio, which was in fact the only major battle of the Lapland War, ended with the victory of the Finns and the defeat of General Rendulic. This general, whose tough stance made him a term for criminals among the Finns, was rightly sentenced to twenty years in prison after the war.
