After Eugene Stoner left Armalite (where he developed the AR-15/ M16 rifle), he set about designing a family of weapons including the handgun, a medium machine gun, a tank machine gun, a automatic rifle (it has a magazine mounted on top of the breech housing),a shotgun and a carbine. The first prototype was chambered in 7.62x51 mm, it was called the M69W (this was 1962) and only because, after flipping the markings, the name is the same. The gun was further developed and eventually designated the Stoner 62, still chambered in 7.62 mm. Eventually it was produced, but the caliber was changed to the then-new 5.56x45 mm cartridge.
The weapon is propelled by taking gases from the barrel and locking with a rotary bolt. Unlike the rifle, the machine gun fires from an open bolt. There is also a lighter version (Stoner 63 AR) with a 30-round magazine. The guns were tested, but not introduced.
