Two 12.8 cm cannons were officially included in the armament of the German army

Anti-tank cannon caliber 12.8 cm Pak 44
By order 12.8 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 44 (12.8 cm Pak 44)

Anti-tank cannon caliber 12.8 cm Pak 80
By order 12.8 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 80 (12.8 cm Pak 80)

The development of the 12.8 cm anti-tank cannon dates back to 1943. The development relied heavily on the anti-aircraft cannon 12.8 cm Flak 40. The first prototypes were introduced by Krupp and Rheinmetall-Borsig. From 11/1943 to 3/1944, 18 cannons were produced.
The cannon was mounted on a cross carriage, which allowed a 360 ° measurement. Thanks to the semi-automatic conclusion, even though the divided ammunition was used, the cannon could fire at a rate of 5 rounds per minute. During the transport of the weapon, four wheels with fully rubber boots were used, which allowed towing at a maximum speed of 35 km/h.
Anti-tank ammunition (28.3 kg projectile) and HE ammunition (28 kg projectile weight) were developed for the cannon.
Only heavy semi-track tractors of 12 to 18 tons could transport the cannon.
These cannons could destroy any Allied tank on all fronts from a relatively long distance. During use, the German army found that the high energy of the bullet's weight, even if it did not pierce the armor, would damage the tank by 90%, making it no longer operational.
In mid-1944, a 12.8 cm Pak 80 anti-tank cannon appeared on the scene. The cannon was designed primarily for use by tank destroyers Jagdtiger and tank Maus.
In the fall of 1944 Krupp introduced two prototypes Kanone 81/1 and Kanone 81/2. The first prototype was built on the mount of a French cannon Canon de 155 mm Grand Puissance Filloux (GPF). Weapon weight 12,172 kg with a measurement of 60 °. The cannon used the same divided ammunition as the Pak 44. The cannon was without muzzle brake.
The second prototype K 81/2 was built on a lighter mount from a Soviet howitzer ML-20 caliber 152.4 mm. The weapon was again equipped with a muzzle brake thanks to a lighter mount. Weight 8,302 kg with elevation 58 °.
On October 25, 1944, Hitler gave permission to assemble 52 12.8 cm Pak 80 guns on Soviet and French gun carriages.
November 8, 1944 are reported the formation of the first anti-tank battery armed with 12.8 cm Pak 81/1 and Pak 81/2 cannons. November 22, 1944 there are already 4 batteries 1092, 1097, 1124 and 1125. Each of the batteries was armed with 10 pieces of PaK 81/2 and 3 pieces of Pak Pak 81/1. Later, the number of these cannons per unit increased, but production never reached the required number.

there were really two cannons, the rheinmetal had the elevation stated by the Cichy, Krupp's cannon had a smaller one (-7 +15), it is a dual-purpose cannon - both a field cannon and an anti-tank cannon. several names were used for the cannons, in addition to PAK 44 it was also K 44, PAK 80, then 12.8 cm PAK 43 or PjK 44.
The muzzle velocity applies to the anti-tank grenade (exactly it is 950m/s) for the fragmentation it is 750m/s ammunition was two-piece, so the projectile separately from the cartridge case.
I don't really understand the penetration as stated, but in a non-source it is stated as follows: 219 mm at 500m, at perpendicular impact, 202 mm at 1000m and 187mm at 1500m, all at perpendicular impact.
The maximum range with a fragmentation charge is stated 24 410m.

The data state:
Armor thickness/distance in meters/armor slope
200/2000/90 °

These cannons are completely different constructions, although the carriages of both cannons are four-wheeled, but with the Rheimetall cannon all four wheels are in front of the carriage and there are two decomposable stabilizing arms in the back, while the Krupp cannon is a carriage that can be said " flatbed "with stabilizing supports.
Rheimetall's cannon failed in the tender, so it was not officially accepted into service, otherwise the literature states that it had the same ballistic performance as Krupp's cannon

Krupp has a cross carriage (a bit similar to Flak's carriage but more massive) I'm not sure about Rheinmetal, but it could also be. At Krupa, I'm not sure if the wheels are on a separate chassis (ie whether it is not possible to take them off during firing and thus ensure greater stability of the cannon and space for the crew around the cannon), but I'm really not sure and I haven't been able to find it in the available sources.

Diskuse

Hi, does anyone have the dimensions or the documentation or photos of ammunition in this weapon. Some time ago we got a projectile of similar caliber and we need to determine whether are used to this weapon. For any answer thanks in advance..
