09.09.2015 - USA chtějí přejmenovat svou nejvyšší horu

The tallest mountain in the USA is no longer to be known as Mount McKinley, but as Denali, after the name of the mountain in one of the Alaska Native languages. However, the move by President Barack Obama has sparked a stormy response from Ohio congressmen who accuse him of overstepping his constitutional powers and failing to inform his descendants, who are outraged by the renaming of the mountain named after the 25th president of the United States William McKinley.

At the same time, the new official height of the mountain was set at 20,310 feet, 10 feet lower than previous measurements from the 1950s had indicated.

"Mount McKinley" was the name given to this mountain in 1896, and it has officially been named since 1917. In 1975, the Alaska Board of Geographic Names changed the name of the mountain back to "Denali" at the local level and requested the same change at the federal level. The Obama administration has thus granted the board's request after forty years, and the name change will occur on federal maps.
