Blériot XI

The ancient human desire to take to the air, to free oneself from earthly gravity, to get closer to the birds and to God, came to fruition on December 17, 1903. On that day, man took to the air for the first time in a heavier flying vehicle. The Wright Brothers' Flyer made only an 80-foot jump, but with it, it was as if all mankind took off. The Flyer was more a jumble of wood, ropes and canvas than anything resembling an aeroplane, but just five years later Louis Blériot designed his Blériot VII - the first monoplane with a tensile propeller, covered fuselage, tail surfaces, main landing gear legs at the front and a spur at the rear. This layout is still valid (despite the thirty-year dominance of biplanes) for piston aircraft today. It was launched on 10 November 1907.

The next two years saw the appearance of a new Blériot in the skies. This was the Blériot XI, the most successful and famous model, in which Louis Blériot flew across the English Channel on 25 June 1909. The enthusiasm of the aviators, overcoming all kinds of difficulties and often sacrificing their lives, knew no bounds. It is all the sadder that their sacrifice, laid on the altar of aviation pioneering, was soon exploited for war purposes.

The Blériot XI also holds several sadder, wartime world firsts. In fact, it became the first aircraft used in war and the first bomber - the aircraft was first used in war on 22 October 1911 during the Italo-Turkish War of Libya. Italian pilot Capt. Piazza took off in a Blériot for a reconnaissance flight from Tripoli, tracking Turkish troops at Azizia. The first raid was carried out on 1 November 1911 by Lt. Giulio Gavotti. He dropped four Cipelli heavy shells on Turkish positions in the Tagnira and Ain Zara oases. Piazza for the first time used a photographic instrument for aerial reconnaissance from an aeroplane.

At the outbreak of World War I. However, at the outbreak of World War I, the Blériot machines were already obsolete, mainly because of their design peculiarity - tilting around the longitudinal axis was not done by means of ailerons, as is usual today, but by twisting the wings. Nevertheless, this aircraft still had a major impact on the course of the English Expeditionary Force's fighting in August 1914, as an English reconnaissance pilot warned the English command of an impending encirclement.
