Weapon sa started konštruovať on the basis of the air kanóna B-20 under the direction of Semyon Vladimiroviča Vladimirov in 1944, the armaments sovietskej army was adopted in 1949. Podvozok under KPV skonštruoval G.P.Markov.
In the 1950 bol skonštruovaný model KPVT, designed pre armament machines. Guľomet KPV poslúžil aj ako basis protilietadlových veľkorážnych guľometov ZPU-1, ZPU-2, ZPU-4 and ZGU-1.
