The BTR-MD was developed as a successor to the BTR-D airborne troop carrier, and its designers made every effort to use components used on the BMD-3 combat vehicle for the sake of unification. However, as the development of the vehicle was stretched out disproportionately and the BMD-3 combat vehicles are to be replaced by new BMD-4M combat vehicles in the near future, it was decided not to start large-scale production, but to use the experience gained to build a similar vehicle using components of the BMD-4M - thus creating the BTR-MDM modernisation.
