Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G s hydrostatickým pohonom
In 1944, an experimental prototype of a tank Pz was created under the direction of Zahnradfabrik (a company producing gearboxes). .Kpfw.IV Ausf.G with hydrostatic drive. The main engine Maybach HL 120 powered a pair of high-performance oil pumps, which they pumped oil into a pair of separate oil engines. These then powered the rear drive gears. The hydrostatic drive uses the function of a closed hydraulic circuit. The circuit works with a small oil flow, but under a lot of pressure. Such a drive provides smooth control, sensitivity and an integrated braking function. The vehicle does not need a transmission. The driver had the controls to control this hydraulic system and used commands to control the operation of the tank. The driver had a set of manometers above the sight glass to check the pressures in the system. The advantages of propulsion and control probably outweighed the disadvantages in the form of increased fuel consumption during conventional tank transfers and especially the costs associated with the production of the entire propulsion system. The curious prototype survived the end of the war and ended up in the USA, where it was tested by Vickers Inc. from Detroit, Michigan. However, the tests were not completed due to failures and lack of spare parts. The prototype ended up in the collections of the US Army Tank Museum in Aberdeen, Maryland, where it is located to this day.
