W-3A Sokol (0709, serial number 370709) from the 243rd Helicopter Squadron during a demonstration of aerial firefighting with the Bambi bag (holds more than 1,100 litres of water per fill), Military Haven Brdy, Bahna 2011, June 2011. Helicopters W-3A Sokol were used intensively in firefighting during the heat wave and drought in the first half of August 2015. On standby with a takeoff time of up to 30 minutes, one helicopter and crew was designated for contingency needs as early as the morning of 5 August, and this readiness was maintained in the following days. Requests for take-off were directed as standard according to the set mechanisms from the OPIS of the General Directorate of the Fire Rescue Corps of the Czech Republic to the Joint Operations Centre of the Ministry of Defence and from it to the 24th Transport Air Force Base with the subordinate 243rd Helicopter Squadron. One W-3A first responded on Wednesday, August 5, at Zdice in Beroun, where extremely high temperatures and poor weather conditions caused a fire to spread over an area of up to eight hectares. In less than two hours, a helicopter dropped twenty thousand litres of water drawn from a pond about two kilometres away. The helicopter landed back in Kbely at around three o'clock in the afternoon. On Friday, 7 August 2015, one W-3A Sokol, on the call of the Fire Brigade Operations Centre, supported the responding units at Dobriv in Rokycany, where a forest was on fire. The firefighters therefore declared a third level of alarm and called in a military helicopter. During the following days, military pilots intervened in five other places in the Czech Republic. These included fighting fires near the villages of Chanovice in the Klatovy district and Šindelová in the Karlovy Vary region. On Monday 10. August military pilots intervened first in the afternoon near the village of Kounice (Vlastějovice) in Kutná Hora district, from where they moved with refueling at the airport Plzeň-Lín to the village of Mladotice in Plzeň North district, where they intervened for the benefit of firefighters in extinguishing the fire until late in the evening.
