Richard Noel Fry was posted to the Royal Armoured Corps on 18 July 1943 as a Second Lieutenant.


Late that year he volunteered for the Airborne Forces. In November 1943 he qualified as a parachutist on Course 90 at RAF Ringway.


He is subsequently posted to the 8th (Midland) Parachute Battalion as a platoon commander in A Company, 3rd Platoon. With it he takes part in the Normandy landings in June 1944, when the battalion is assigned DZ K and given the task of defending the beachhead for the main Allied forces.


Later that month, the battalion's A Company also repels a strong German attack at Le Mesnil, with Fry earning a MC.


"For conspicuous gallantry and leadership. At Le Mesnil on June 16, 1944, Lt. Fry commanded an advance platoon which had already repulsed enemy attacks for 8 hours, the enemy outnumbered the unit by the amount of resources deployed. When the platoon's position was under heavy mortar and machine gun fire, Lt. Fry displayed courage and disregard for his personal safety and went around encouraging his men.Because of his courage and determination, the enemy was unable to penetrate his platoon's position. However, on previous occasions Lieut. Fry had shown courage in leading his patrols against the enemy." For these facts he is awarded the Military Cross.


On June 27, 1944, he is wounded while advancing with his platoon to clear a farmhouse of the enemy. He is subsequently evacuated to hospital.


After recovering, he returns to active duty, serving late in Palestine until his demobilization with the rank of honorary captain.
