Already just after World War I in the 1920s, a secret project to develop light and medium tanks was started in Germany. It was kept secret because of the restrictive measures contained in the Treaty of Versailles, which prohibited the development, production and use of any tank technology.

In 1925, under the code name Armeewagen 20, specifications for a new medium tank were commissioned.

Weight around 15t (20t ?)
maximum length: 6m
maximum height: 2.4m(2.35m ?)
specific ground pressure: 0.5kp/m2
wading: 0.8m + seaworthiness
pitch: 30°
oversteer: 1m
maximum speed: 40km/hr
armament: 75mm Kw.K. gun. L/24 in a fully rotatable turret + 2-4 machine guns (among other things, in a separate machine gun turret at the rear of the machine)

The companies Daimler-Benz, Rheinmetall-Borsig and Krupp took part in the competition for the new tank. Each of the companies was to build two prototypes in unpunched steel (6-14 mm). The firms were to manufacture the individual components and ship them to Rheinmetall-Borsig, where the individual machines were to be assembled. Work on the machines began in 1925 and the planned tests were to take place in 1929/30.
The designs of the various companies were very similar and bore the characteristic features of the designs of the time. The hull was high, the undercarriage was made up of a number of small running wheels and they were multi-tower designs. In addition to the main turret, the machines also had a rear machine gun turret.which did not have a circular sight. The sides of the machines and their undercarriage parts were covered by metal aprons. The machines had three support pulleys each. For each machine there were holes in these aprons for maintenance, for each type they had different shape and size. Propulsion during navigation was provided by propellers in the rear of the machines.

Machine from Krupp. Although it was visually similar to competing Grosstraktor designs by Daimler-Benz and Rheinmetall-Borsig, it had many differences. Two prototypes were built (Nr.43 in 1928 and Nr.44 in 1929). After trials, the machines were modified in 1931.
