British merchant steamer Stonepool

This steamer was sailing in convoy OB-17 with a cargo of 6,600 tons of coal and other cargo. On 13 October 1939 at about 8:30 a.m. she was detached from the convoy and subsequently damaged by direct fire from a submarine U-42 under the command of Rofl Dau. The steamer Stonepool was saved by the superb aim of her gunners, who drove U-42 under the surface so quickly that the gunners did not have time to enter the submarine through the hatches. Meanwhile, as U-42 resurfaced to rescue her gunners, Stonepool alerted the destroyers HMS Ilex (D 61) and HMS Imogen (D 44) to the submarine's presence. On the evening of 13 October 1939, the submarine was sunk. Of the 46 crew members, 20 survived, including Lieutenant Commander Dau.
Less than 2 years later, on 11 September 1941, the steamer Stonepool was part of convoy SC-42, carrying 7,000 tons of grain, 528 tons of oats and 115 tons of trucks.
At about 2:45 a.m., the steamer Stonepool was hit by a torpedo, and 5 minutes later the steamer Berury was hit, both ships sinking. Although there are no records from this period, the sinking of these ships is attributed to the submarine U-207, under the command of Naval Lieutenant Fritz Meyer, which was sunk a few hours later by escort vessels. Of Stonepool's crew of 49 men, 42 were killed, including the captain.
