Prior-Palmer was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in his youth.


After graduating from the academy in 1923, he is assigned as a second lieutenant to the 9th Lancers (9th Lancers) with whom his older brother Otho Prior-Palmer was already serving.


He became a captain in 1930, a lieutenant colonel in 1941, a colonel in 1946 and a brigadier in 1948. During the fighting in 1940 in northeastern Europe he was mentioned in reports. As commander of the 27th Armoured Brigade he takes part in the Normandy landings and serves in Europe until 1945.


In 1946 he becomes military attaché in Washington, D.C., a post he holds for two years.


In 1951 he becomes a major general and is given command of the newly formed 6th Armored Brigade. In 1954 he returns to Washington as Commander of the British Military Staff and a member of the Bristol Joint Services Mission, and remains in that post for the next three years.


From 1956-1957 he is president of the Ordinary Commission ? (Regular Commissions Board), War Office in 1958 he retires.


After retirement he begins a successful civilian career. In 1958 he takes up a job with the British & Commonwealth Shipping Company. From 1959 to 1964 he is the Southampton Cloud Director for the Union-Castle Line, in 1964–1965 manager of Cayzer Irvine and Special Adviser to the British and Commonwealth Group. From 1965 to 1969 managing director of Overseas Containers Ltd.


In 1969 he retired but from 1973 until his death was a director of J. A. Peden Ltd.
