CKB-15 (1934)
A prototype of a similar design as the CKB 12, but armed with 20 mm ŠVAK cannons in the wings.

I-16, typ 5 (1935)
Improved version type 4 - new engine hood, slots for exhausts, which were to cause a small additional thrust, a new propeller cone, the cabin cover moved forward. Possibility of hanging 200 kg of bombs.

I-16 UTI, UTI-4 (1935)
A two-seater school version of the I-16 Type 5 aircraft with an M 25A engine (730 hp/537 kW) for training new pilots and for flight training according to on-board instruments - the rear cockpit was covered with an opaque cover. Initially without any armament, in later versions, produced on the basis of types 10, 18 and 24, 2 ŠKAS machine guns were left in the wings.

CKB-18 (1935)
Prototype battle version CKB-12 with M-22 engine. He was the first in the USSR to have complete armor of the cockpit, armament 4 machine guns ŠKAS type PV-1 and 100 kg of bombs.

I-16 SPB (1935)
Version I-16 type 4, adapted as a parasitic aircraft in the program "ECONOMIC". SPB meant "sostavnoj pikirujuščij bombardirovščik" - roughly parasitic dive bomber. Therefore, he had curtains for 2 bombs FAB-250.

CKB-29 SPB model 164 (1936)
The CKB-12 bis version for dive bombing, was to carry 200 kg of bombs. The version was not mass-produced.

I-16 P (pušečnyj) (1936)
Version I-16 type 5, engine Wright Cyclone R-1820 F-3 (730 hp), armed with 2 synchronized machine guns ŠKAS, in their place in the wings 2 cannons ŠVAK 20 mm. The type was not mass-produced.

I-16 Šturmovik (1936)
Two I-16 Type 5 machines were experimentally equipped with six ŠKAS machine guns in the wings, swinging down at an angle of up to 10 degrees. Both machines were completed at the end of 1936, but the series was not mass-produced.

I-16 typ 6[/b ] (1937)
Mass-produced type with an M-25A engine (730 hp) with two non-synchronized ŠKASs in the wings and a third synchronized at the bottom of the fuselage.

I-16 typ 10 (1937)
received two more synchronized ŠKASs above the engine, an open cockpit with a fixed front plate (stainless steel frame) was introduced. The ALDIS optical sight has been replaced by a collimator. It was called the "Super Mosca" in Spain.

I-16 typ 12 (1937)

I-16P (pušečnyj) CKB (1938)
Based on experience from Spain, the I-16 type 10 was armed with two cannons ŠVAK 20 mm with a supply of 150 grenades per barrel, located instead of wing machine guns. Their barrels protruded considerably from the leading edge of the wing. The installation proved successful and even tested the installation of 4 cannons (two above the engine synchronized).

I-16 typ 17 (1938)
was a serial version of the previous type 10, with which it was produced in parallel with the M-25V engine (780 hp), ie with two cannons in the wings and suspension for 200 kg bombs. It was designed to attack ground targets and therefore was sometimes mounted still synchronized machine gun BS above or below the engine. The first mass-produced aircraft in the USSR, armed with a 20 mm cannon.

I-16 TK (1939)
All versions of the I-16 flew with M-25A or M-25V engines. As the weight continued to increase with increasing versions, it was necessary to increase performance at higher altitudes. On one of the I-16 Type 10 machines, two exhaust-gas turbochargers, developed at the CIAM Institute, were mounted on the sides of the fuselage behind the engine. The aircraft reached a speed of 494 km/h at 8,600 m and the access increased to 11,000 m.

I-16 typ 18 ( 1939
Armament 4 ŠKAS machine guns with 3,100 rounds, M-62 engine with an output of 920 hp/676 kW with a two-speed compressor, VIŠ 6A propellers, adjustable to two positions of the blade pitch angle. If the two wing machine guns were replaced by ŠVAK cannons, it was referred to as Type 27

I-16 typ 24 (1939)
modifications of type 18. Used engines M - 62 and M - 63, adjustable propeller AV-1, many other modifications

I-16 typ 27 (1939)

I-16 typ 28 (1939)

I-16 typ 29 (1940) - was the last development type of the I-16 series. It had an M-63 engine, smaller propeller diameter, standardly prepared for radio assembly, redesigned chassis, under the wings hinges for two additional tanks of 135 liters of gasoline, under the engine synchronized machine gun BS 12.7 mm, three launchers for RS-82 missiles under each wing etc. But mostly they flew without a radio station, additional tanks and discharge devices.

The aircraft had a fully covered cabin and a retractable landing gear. Flight weight 1370.5 kg, maximum speed at flight weight was 349 km/h, landing speed 127 km/h. The type was not mass-produced, two more UT-2 machines were created.

I-16 UTI-3 (1935)
Dvojmiestna školská verzia I-16 typ 4, (No. 11211), motor M-58 . The aircraft had a fully exposed cabin and a retractable landing gear. The front cab had a windshield. The type was not mass-produced due to the non-inclusion of the M-58 engine in series production.

I-16 UTI-2 (I-16 type 14) (1935)
Two-seater school version based on type 4, built in 1935-1936 with engine M-22 . 45 machines were built. Production did not continue due to a shortage of M-22 engines. The aircraft had fully exposed cabins with windshields and a solid landing gear. In 1937, a specimen with a retractable chassis appeared.

I-16 UTI-4 (I-16 type 15) (1936)
Two-seater school version of the aircraft based on I-16 typ 5. The fuselage had a wooden shell construction of birch plywood, a metal wing with chrome-molybdenum steel beams, duralumin ribs. The wing is mostly covered with duralumin sheet, the rest with canvas. The tail surfaces of the metal structure were covered with canvas. Some machines flew with a fixed landing gear, in the winter skis were mounted on the landing gear. A total of 3,400 UTI-4 aircraft were built in 1937-1942. Later manufactured machines received the M-22V engine. During the Great Patriotic War, a smaller amount of UTI-4 was converted to type UTI-4 type 15B (Bojevoj) in factory No. 458 in Rostov-on-Don. The rear cabin was covered and 2 machine guns were mounted in the wing BK caliber 12.7 mm and launchers rackets RS-82.
