Juan Comas Borrás was born in Lloret de Mar 31. January 1913, and when he was fifteen, he was accepted into naval flight school in Barcelona, which ended three years later. He was destined to air specialization as a pilot of seaplanes, therefore, returned to Barcelona on the base of the flying boats, where he attended a course of piloting these aircraft. In 1932, however, asked for a release from the corps for family reasons.

When I broke out in July 1936, the Spanish civil war, he decided to lean on the side of the republicans. He returned in August to base seaplanes to Barcelona, but from there he was sent to San Javier on the course of piloting fighter planes, after which he was assigned to fly on the Russian I-15 Chato. 19. 11. 1936 he was přiřknuta rank for sublt (sargento). At the end of January 1937 was sent to the fighter unit operating with aircraft Chato from Lerida, and Sarrión Castejon. 17. April 1937 to Comas participated in the battle between 15 Chatos and three squadrons of aeroplanes, Heinkel He 51. Heavily damaged one biplane the enemy, who then protect and gentlemen enough to walk up behind enemy lines to an emergency landing.

He fought on the northern front until the fall of Santander. Then he was assigned to the sector in the middle part of the queue, with effect from 15. 8. 1937 he was promoted to first lieutenant and was commissioned to create a 3. squadron Chatos, which was then deployed at the Aragon. In the battle of Teruel fought almost constantly. Shot down here at least one the Fiat CR.32. His courage and ability won him 7. 3. 1938 promotion to captain.

15. may at the airport in El Toro when returning from a combat flight over Levante, offended at the landing gear and crashed. Suffered injuries that required hospitalization in the Torrent and the queue is back up to 13. September 1938, he took command of the 26. fighter of the group.

With the unit participated in heavy fighting in Catalonia; the group operated from airports Monjos and Sabadell. During the battle on the river Ebro was 5. November their airport attacked by bombers the Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 and Comas suffered a severe injury to shrapnel of bombs to the left foot, which he then had to be amputated.

For his strong command of the 26. group was 17. 11. 1938 promoted to the rank of major. He was evacuated to France, where he remained hospitalized for six months and then was interned in a camp for Spanish refugees in Gurs. He was later arrested by the Germans, who, though they treated him respectfully, it later handed over to the Spanish authorities.


After his release he retired to his native county, where he became in the 80's. years the mayor of the town of Tordera. He died 2. may 1992.

Comas was one of the pilots who've flown the most flight hours in I-15 Chato; his overall raid amounted to more than 500 hours. The number of confirmed kills is featured from 7 to 10, making it among the 10 most successful republican fighters.
