In mid-1935, the firm Krauss-Maffei was commissioned by Baurat Dipl. Ing. Ernest Kniepkamp (WaPrüf 6) to draw up a number of design proposals for light tanks. The specifications called for fast tanks. To meet this requirement, the use of large running wheels without supporting pulleys, the use of torsion bars, the use of new small engines with increased power outputs, the use of modern semi-automatic transmissions and new control units were required. The chassis designs were to make use of structural elements from the semitrailer tractors with which the company Krauss-Maffei had extensive experience.
The first design was a concept for a 3-ton tank VK 3. Work on the design took place between 10/1937 and 4/1938. In addition to the data given in the table above, the diameter of the torsion bars (27 mm) is known, the diameter of the running wheels (four on each side) was to be about 700 mm. The height of the track link was to be 160 mm, its width 240 mm (??? Zpw 51/240/160 - lubricated with rubber washers). The form of the machine (chassis) was sketched on drawing ZM 125004-3 (dated 1/1938).


The VK 3 program was subsequently developed into the design proposals VK 5, VK 6, VK 6.01 and VK 6.02.
