Born 19.09.1903 in Krems, 1922 joined the Austrian Federal Army, 1928 lieutenant of the air force, from 1933 commander of a fighter squadron. In 1935 as captain commander of Jagdgruppe 1 and member of the demonstration squadron. 1938 transferred to the Luftwaffe and given command of IV./JG 134. Trained on Me 110, 1939 commander of III./ZG 26. During the Western campaign 1940 for five aerial victories awarded both degrees of the Iron Cross and the Luftwaffe Cup of Honour. After achieving 11 air victories on 5.9.1940 he was awarded the Knight's Cross as the first Me 110 pilot and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. During the first months of the Russian campaign, the squadron achieved its 1,000th aerial victory and 1,500th enemy vehicle destruction. Schalk shot down his last four opponents over Russia with a total of 15. 1.10.1941 became commodore of NJG 3 and 1943 briefly commander of NJG 4, then at the rank of colonel Jafü Deutsche Bucht. 1944 abschnittsfhr. 1945 in British captivity, died 09.11.1987 in Graz, Styria.
