Johann Mohr was one of the submarine commanders who spent his service on a single submarine. He served his first three voyages under Georg-Wilhelm Schulz.
Mohr achieved great success against enemy warships. On his first cruise as commander in November 1941, he sank the British light cruiser HMS Dunedin and in 1942 he sank the French corvette Mimosa. Mohr's greatest success came on the night of 12 May 1942, when his U-124 sank 4 ships of 21,784t.
Mohr was killed when U-124 was sunk on 2 April 1943 west of Oporto, Portugal by the British corvette HMS Stonecrop and the sloop HMS Black Swan.

Submarine Captain Kptlt. Johann Mohr on the captain's bridge U-124 with unfinished bread in his hand. Note the pony tail (Edelweiss) on his captain's cap, which was the symbol of U-124. The images were taken during the vessel's eighth voyage, which lasted from 21 February to 10 April 1942. It was during this cruise (27.03.1942) that Mohr was awarded the Knight's Cross for sinking seven ships off the American East Coast in the space of ten days.
