The T-80B and T-80BV tanks are the first modernized version of the T-80 with significantly higher combat qualities. Type T-80BV differs from T-80B only in increased ballistic protection, which provides additional dynamic armor of the tower and hull front. The main armament of the T-80B tank is a modernized 125 mm cannon 2A46M-1 stabilized in two planes. It has a smooth bore and heat protection mainly. The crew can use anti-tank guided missiles 9M112 KOBRA with a range of 100 to 4000 m and a penetration of up to 700 mm to destroy long-range targets. The tank is equipped with a 1A33 fire control system modified from a T-64B tank. Additional equipment with smoke grenade launchers is identical to the basic type. The disadvantage of this system remains the lower effectiveness of conducting combat operations at night and in difficult weather conditions.
In addition, the T-80BV tanks are equipped as standard with a set of semi-trailer additional dynamic armor DZ with almost 130 segments. The drive is provided by a gas turbine GTD 1000TF with an output of 809 kW with a manual transmission. The drive unit is equipped with a smoke generator TDA. The belt movement system is the same as in the basic type, but the covers of the track belts are reinforced in the front part by dynamic armor. The tank is equipped with an automatic fire protection device ZEC13 INEJ. A major disadvantage of the power unit is the high fuel consumption of the gas turbine and its short service life.

The T-80BV tank is a modification of the T-80B tank with dynamic armour. Compared to the original version, the T-80 includes dynamic armour, a new gun, a new turbine, an improved integrated fire control system, a laser rangefinder, and IC observation instruments, WMD crew protection device, automatic reloading device, 2x4 smoke grenade launchers, and PTRK AT-8 (9K112 Cobra).
The turret is located in the center of the hull, the engine-gear compartment incorporating the gas turbine at the rear. The driver sits in the center of the front of the hull, the gunner sits in the left half of the turret, and the commander in the right. The turret has a full 360° sight picture and the gun sight is between -5° and +14°.

The T-80BV is an early variant of one of the Soviet Union's last-produced tanks, with a distinctively angular Kontakt-1 armor array resulting in increased protection to the turret top and lessened protection to its sides.

The T-80BV tank entered the arsenal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces along with other equipment as a legacy of the USSR. The tanks were gradually phased out of combat units and stored, with more than 200 of these tanks in storage in Ukraine in 2014. After the experience of fighting in the Donbas, it was decided in 2015 to reintegrate them into the troops - specifically for the needs of airborne units. The first 8 T-80BV tanks were taken over by the 95th Independent Assault Airborne Brigade in July 2015, after an overhaul (and slight modernization) at the Kharkiv Tractor Plant. In 2017, another series of refurbished T-80BVs was handed over to the airborne troops and the Marine Corps, and deliveries of other, already more deeply upgraded tanks began in 2019. Their modernization took advantage of the experience gained from the operation of the T-64BV model 2017 (Т-64БВ зrazка 2017). The upgrades included a new infrared sight, new dynamic protection, and additional armour on the tank's sides, the original radios were replaced by new digital ones, and the tank also received a new night vision system with a 3rd generation electro-optical transducer. The tanks also received a new navigation system that, in addition to detecting its own position via GPS, allows that position to be shared at all levels of command from platoon commander to operational command.
