History

The M-72 motorcycle is a Soviet licensed construction of the BMW motorcycle, specifically the R-71 model, which has already ceased production in Germany. In the USSR, partial changes were made (filters, shock absorbers ...) and the machine was introduced as M-72 (M is sometimes explained as Molotov, which is probably not true). Originally, the production was to run in Moscow, but by July 1941 it failed to start and only a few pieces were created, the plant was moved to the Urals to Irbit and so the IMZ, Irbitsky Motorcycle Plant. Production of the M-72 ran here from 1942 to 1960, while from 1951 production expanded to Kiev (KMZ) and after the war a modernized version of the M-72M.

During the war, IMZ managed to produce a total of 9800 pieces, so the RA had to rely more on Allied machines (Lend and Lease). The first motorcycles made in IMZ were delivered in October 1942. Unlike the German BMW 75 machines, they did not have a Soviet trailer wheel drive. The reason was allegedly the simplification of production and perhaps even better driving characteristics on the road (the motorcycle with the drive turns harder). Real large-scale production started only after the war, by the end of 1945 about 10,000 pieces were produced, by 1950 about 30,000, total production by 1960 is reported at 3,000,000 pieces, and since 1950, motorcycles were sold on the civilian market (until then only for the army). Most of the machines were made with a side truck, the interesting thing is that the truck did not have wheel suspension until 1943, it was introduced only this year, but unsprung trucks were still produced in parallel. In 1957, the USSR sold a license for the M-72M to China, allegedly with a production line.

A side note, despite the fact that you come across many "insider" analyzes, which differs in appearance M-72 and R 71, such as fenders, tank shape and the like, comparisons with war photos unfortunately show that the recognition is not as the authors imagine them . War-produced motorcycles differ from each other, and apparently production was not entirely uniform, even though it ran in only one factory. Attempts by "tuners" to rebuild into the R71 are also frequent, but even that usually doesn't work very well, especially since it is a post-war version with a reinforced frame (war is, as far as I know, unavailable).

Motorcycle in original condition, mostly used in representation of KVH A.Bogdanova Choceň, but approved for normal operation. The content of the soot always definitely pleases the eye of a connoisseur (but even a layman's eye will not remain dry).

Něco pro modeláře.

M-72- motocykel s prívesným vozíkom z výzbroje čs.armády z roku 1952. Ako zaujímavosť dávam do pozornosti zaretušovanú VPZ na prednom blatníku. Tento trend sa udržal skoro 4 desaťročia ako prvok na utajenie výzbroje ako aj dislokácie jednotlivých zložiek a útvarov.
