The Abbot was introduced into the armament of the British Army in 1963. Its mission is direct fire support to motorised and tank units.
The main weapon is a 105 mm tank gun in a swivel turret on a chassis from the transporter F.V.432. Characteristic is the shape of the chassis, which has five support wheels and two support pulleys. The main advantages are excellent mobility and the ability to overcome water obstacles with the help of a raised sail fixed in a special frame around the perimeter of the top of the chassis.
The petrol engine is in the front, the turret is square with many protrusions and on the right side is the commander's station.
The disadvantages are the complexity of the chassis and the square shape of the turret.
This type was to replace the obsolete 87.6 mm Sexton and Bishop howitzers.
The prototypes (12 pieces) had both petrol and diesel engines.
The crew used the Sterling L2A1,L2A3,L34A1 9 mm calibre gun for personal protection.
