中島 二式水上戦闘機 - Nakajima Ni-Shiki-Suijo-Sentoki - Navy Type 2 Fighter
Abbreviated designation: Suisen 2
Allied reporting name: "Rufe".

The first production A6M2-N was delivered in April of 1942. The A6M2-N first appeared in combat in the Solomons. The A6M2-N was given the Allied code name "Rufe". A6M2-Ns were initially deployed to Tulagi, but were caught in the raids leading up to the American landings on Guadalcanal. Although they inflicted some serious damage on the B-17s of the 11th Bombardment Group, these A6M2-Ns were soon destroyed.

The aircraft was deployed in 1942 in defensive actions in the Aleutians and Solomon Islands operations. Such seaplanes were effective at night in harassing American PT boats, and they were very difficult to detect, even with primitive radar. The A6M2-N was also used in the Aleutian campaign. In spite of the weight and drag of the float, the A6M2-N was actually quite fast and maneuverable, and could even outmaneuver many Allied fighters if they were unwise enough to try and dog-fight with this floatplane. On several occasions, they succeeded in scoring kills against aircraft as formidable as the P-38 Lightning.

As the war in the Pacific progressed, the A6M2-N was encountered just about everywhere. However, by this time the Japanese Navy had been thrown back onto the defensive, and in this mode the A6M2-N was no match for the Allied land-based fighters which opposed it. In spite of its obsolescence, the A6M2-N was still in service at Lake Biwa on the Japanese island of Honshu, being used primarily to train pilots for Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu floatplane fighters, but occasionally being called up to act as an interceptor in the defense of central Honshu.

Mitsubishi A6M2-N
- / Nishikisuisen / Rufe
中島 二式水上戦闘機 / Nišiki Suidžó Sentóki / Marine float fighter Type 2

History:
Approximately a year before the outbreak of the war in the Pacific command naval aviation decided to list the specifications of the 15-Shi on the float fighter aircraft. Were selected two projects, one from the company Kawanishi N1K1 , and the other from the company Nakajima A6M2-N (N means that this is a float fighter and not that it made Nakajima). Kawanishi proposed a completely new aircraft, and so was the assumption that the aircraft will be ahead of you to have a long development, the Kaigun Koku Hombu therefore, the specifications of the 16-Shi called on the factory Nakajima Hikoki To.To. in Nauru, to adjust the on-board fighter Zeke into a new form.
On the project, the factory designation of AS-1, have been working since February 1941 the engineers Niitake and Tajima. The chassis was removed and zaplechován. On the front of the wing spar is made oblique pylon, which carried the central float. At the ends of the wings were two small balancing floats. In the center of the float was still an auxiliary fuel tank. The first prototype flew 7.12.1941, therefore, in the day, when the war began in the Pacific. The tests, which engage three more prototypes, lasted about half a year and from 2.7.1942 began mass production.

Operational deployment:
The first unit, which was armed with this type was Yokosuka Kokutai, she had a base in Tulagi. Float Zero from here vzlétaly against american reconnaissance and bomber aircraft (B-17 and B-24) and up to their complete destruction - day of the landing of the Americans on Guadalcanal. Rufe, such was kodové allied designation of this tank, operated on in the region of the Solomon islands (14. Kokutai). 452.Kokutai this type was used on the Auletách and 934.Kokutai at the base of the Ambon operating against the australian air force. Here were the aircraft Rufe gradually replaced by more modern Kawanishi N1K1 Kyufu and so we see that to fulfill their bridging role of the well, its operating activities ended at lake Biwa on the home island of Honshu..

The correct marking machine is the A6M2-N, the allies gave it the code "Rufe".
On this type of flying's greatest ace flying on a float plane in the Pacific, is about a pilot named Eitoku Matsunaga flying at 934. of the air group.
His machine carried on the tail of the designation "934-06" and through the rear part of the fuselage carried a yellow flash.
The one who looks at this aircraft, he can certainly with the respect to appreciate the 8 kills in this tank, between which there is also a four-engine B-24 Liberator..

Another photo of the A6M2-N and another photo is clear evidence that Rufe's pilots were opponents that the pilot of the Allied bomber had to take seriously.
On the plane " NI-II8" flew with the 803rd Air Group Lieutenant Keizo Yamazaki.

Put another trojpohledový sketch. Blue color I marked the area that was to be supplemented to offset the increase in side area in front of the centre of gravity of the aircraft after mounting the floats..
