For the growing numbers of the Austro-Hungarian army, the present-day "Upper Barracks" called Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand and Infanterie Kaserne were built between 1911 and 1912. Artillery troops were stationed there from the very beginning. This is also evidenced by today's "Artillery Street" in their vicinity. The barracks consist of eight buildings arranged around a rectangular courtyard. All the buildings had electricity and water supply, there was a headquarters, non-commissioned officers' quarters, men's quarters, stables for horses and a prison. The barracks buildings are an example of late Art Nouveau architecture. The name 'Jan Žižka Barracks' dates back to the period after the Second World War.
