CZK/POL - OT-64 SKOT

Přehled variant
Armored transporter OT-64

OT-64 CATTLE was at the time of its inception, progressive armored vehicle designed by the czechoslovak and Polish industry. Project was founded in the year 1959. Our party was responsible for the chassis and power units and transmission partner for the superstructure, and armor. The first prototype under the name of CATTLE (medium wheeled armoured transporter) was constructed in 1959, and in 1961 was made the first test series and concluded the treaty between Czechoslovakia and Poland on joint production. The armament of the two armies was OT-64 introduced in the mid-sixties.
Marked with (for its time) a very good design, combat and driving characteristics, e.g., drive all eight wheels, differential lock front and rear axles, two control the front axles, central huštěním tires (CHP - allows the pumping of the individual wheels and for the drive), planetary gearbox Praga Wilson, voyage and more. At that time it was not in so great a degree in any army introduced a similar vehicle.
The drive of the vehicle is implemented in a diesel, air-cooled engine of Tatra, which ensures hassle-free driving in terrain and on roads. Communication is the vehicle able to reach speeds of around 100 km/h.
Transported by mechanized team is protected from projectiles of small calibre and shrapnel grenades. The vehicle's entire body.
Originally is the OT-64A is armed with a 14.5 mm machine gun KPVT and shadow 7.62 mm machine gun SGMT, which was along these lines replaced by the 7.62 mm tank machine gun PKT. In some new versions of the OT-64A is used instead of KPVT used a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun NSV. To protect the crew also contributes filtroventilační device with divorce throughout the interior of the vehicle. Currently, there is a gradual reduction of the numbers and the decommissioning of OT-64 from the arsenal of the CZECH army.

Gentlemen,
In 1966, the CSLA Engineer Research Center was working on protecting the OT-64 crew from chemical weapons. The result was the design of a central filter-ventilation device (FVZ), which was intended to provide a slight overpressure in the compartments of the armoured personnel carrier under normal operating conditions. In the event of hull damage, this device also provided emergency air distribution.

Basic data of the FZV
- driver's cab volume: 2,3 m3
- volume of the airborne compartment: 7,7 m3
- individual FZV distribution designed for 20 persons
- total FZV output: 100 m3 per hour

Notes
Research and Test Centre 040 was located in Prague in 1960-1977.

OT-64 were deployed in 2000-2001 in the UNMEE peacekeeping mission Eritrea-Ethiopia included in the engineering company of the Slovak contingent. They were prepared for this mission in VOP 027 Trenčín. Despite the fact that in the GTC they received an additional surge oil cooler, it was quite a disaster at a high altitude exceeding 2000m. The engines and gearboxes became very hot at speeds. After the delivery of Tatrapanov, these OTs were leased by the Kenyan contingent stationed in the port city of Asseb, which was already on the plain and there the overheating could be guarded by a quiet ride up to 50km/h, but the father received a new mess in the form of Kenyans. The training and service of the Kenyan semi-non-drivers was provided by instructors with VOP 027 Trenčín and they grew up and went crazy. The Kenyans depreciated one royal shaft, engine and gearbox after another. One pearl: an OT malfunction was reported on the patrol in the lunch hours, the men ate and sat down in a service car (Pajero) and within two hours of driving it was on the spot and the OT-reve left there for about 2-2.5 hours on full of balls, a pile of smoke and a frightened Kenyan hiding in other fathers at a reasonable distance. The fault was with the injection pump. The Kenyans were frightened that the engine was exploding, so they ran away and left their father at his fate. The engine didn't break it anymore. I don't think they returned to Slovakia.

An interesting conversion of the OT-64 CATTLE, which used during the Mosul operation in 2017 Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF/PMU, ie pro-Iranian militia, now part of the Iraqi Armed Forces). The machine has modified superstructures, especially it is obvious that it does not have the original chassis when it has 6 instead of 8 axles, which are also larger. Further modified loophole, armored wheel cover and the rear part of the superstructure is also raised.

Diskuse

I am convinced that the Slovak Cobra has this "šedesátčtyřka" common machine-the bottom...
This modification without the tower appeared for the first time, at a time when the then (still) Czechoslovakia got involved for the first time in the peacekeeping operations in Yugoslavia (perhaps IFOR) - the reason for this "modification" of the vehicle by removing the towers (originally KPVT 14.5 mm and SGMT/PKT 7.62 mm) and mounting of the rotary nabíječova hatch of the T-54/55 (12.7 mm NSV-T) reportedly was an effort to intimidate the civilian population in the area of activity.
This argument is utterly misguided, particularly if the life of such "civilian population" takes place/took place in two, that is, regularly alternating periods: "rakija shooting" and "peacekeepers shooting"....

Some readers of this forum have asked me about the OT-64 Skot version split. Information from different sources sometimes contradicts each other.
I found a page in the OT-64 SKOT parts catalog yesterday where the version breakdown is concise and clear. Current as of 1970. Other versions with M or MT came in the 1980s during overhauls and changes in radio armament and equipment.

Greetings to all OT 64 fans. I am a former driver of OT 64 1985-87 in Prague "Podbabe" unit 85-85. After finding this site on the "net" I am pleasantly surprised how many fans the "oté" has found. I will spend tonight searching these pages.
