The 120 mm mortar is intended for silencing and destroying manpower, equipment and firepower, distributed freely in the field, in shelters (trenches) and shelters, especially in mountain wooded terrain.

It is an artillery weapon without a reciprocating device with a thin-walled smooth barrel.

It is possible to fire a mortar in two ways:

- by pulling the trigger lever,
- by hitting a mine on an extended firing pin.

The construction of the mortar allows the conducting of circular fire at a distance of 250 to 8036 m.

The mortar is towed on a light two-wheeled chassis or transported on a vehicle Praga V3S.

Firing position of mortars vz. 82 PRAM-L from the state of the 1st task group of the eFP mortar platoon from the group 71. Mechanized Battalion, Adazi Military Training Area, Latvia, August 2018.

The most significant conclusion in strengthening the Alliance's deterrence and defense capabilities was the decision of the NATO Summit in Warsaw in July 2016 to deploy four Alliance multinational combat groups in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland within the so-called Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). This consists in the permanent presence of multinational combat groups of NATO member states on the basis of reinforced mechanized battalions (approximately 1,000 or more people) in the Baltic states and Poland. The activities of the individual battle groups are managed and the leaders, who are also the largest providers of forces and resources, are responsible for their construction and permanent fulfillment. The leading countries in the battle groups will operate for a long time, other allies will then contribute militarily on a voluntary basis and in a rotating manner. The leading countries for Estonia are the United Kingdom, for Lithuania Germany, Canada for Latvia and the USA for Poland. The country's leaders called on the Allies to make national military contributions to the group. The first eFP units were deployed in the Baltic States in early 2017, with operational capabilities reaching mid-June 2017.

The Czech Army contributed to the eFP with a company task force based on a mechanized company 41. mechanized battalion deployed in Lithuania (up to 230 people with infantry fighting vehicles KBVP Pandur II CZ) and a mortar platoon 71. mechanized battalion deployed in Latvia (up to 60 people). The first unit to travel to the Baltics on June 14, 2018, became the mortar platoon of the 71st Mechanized Battalion from the Borders, which strengthened the formation of the Canadian-led combat group in Latvia. The combat group was concentrated at the Latvian military base in the Adazi training area, about 45 km northeast of the capital Riga. The main armament of the Czech platoon consisted of towed mortars vz. 82 PRAM-L transported on vehicles Tatra 815-7 PRAM. The whole task force of 55 soldiers (together with 40 members of the border battalion participated in this mission another 15 members of the ACR, mainly from 14th Logistics Support Regiment) and 20 pieces of equipment under under the command of Captain Michal Bogdan, he traveled by rail from the Hlubočky station through Poland to the Latvian border. From there, the soldiers covered about 450 kilometers on their own axis to the place of operation in the Latvian training area Adazi.
