Operation NEPTUNE
Caen it was one of the most important objectives of the initial phase of operation OVERLORD. The city was the largest based in the area of the landing, lay on the river Orne and Caenském channel, near him was the airport and it was a big road and railway junction. The landscape around it is very flat, in contrast to the landscapes referred to bocage, so I assumed easier procedure. For this reason, the Allies have planned his cast already as part of operation NEPTUNE. However, the british 3. infantry division, which successfully landed on the beach of the SWORD, no longer the city on D-day the city failed to occupy. Half way between the beach and the city was halted counterattacks of the German 21. panzer division.

Operation PERCH
This condition forced the allied high command to amend the plans. Operation PERCH, which should lie in the strike of the conquered Caen to the south-east, now had to bring the conquest of the city. Originally, it was foreseen that 50. (northumbrijská) infantry division will occupy Bayeux, and then advance in the direction of Tilly-sur-Seulles. Gradually her here was on the forefront of the attack to replace 7. armored division, which was to initiate the process to the mountain of Mont Pinçon, the highest natural peak in the entire area. Day 9. June edited Montgomery due to the unfavorable situation plans - Caen should be surrounded by a wide flanking attacks. In the east had 51. (highland) infantry division of the assembly. corps to pass through a bridgehead to the east of the river Orne and attack the south the direction of Cagny. The west had 7. armored division to cross the river Odon, capture Évrecy and the adjacent dimension 112. In the ideal case, then should the unit go further in my direction and with the support of 1. airborne division (operation WILD OATS) to finish closing the circle around Caen. However, the airborne operation was first postponed and eventually cancelled, after all the advance of the forces on the ground has stalled. The unit XXX. corps ran into determined opposition Tank instruction division and part 12. panzer division near Tilly-sur-Seulles. The germans here perfectly took advantage of the terrain and were able to significantly hamper the allied advance. Problems had Also. choir. 51. infantry division is significantly delayed and the fight went to 12. June. In addition, members of the 21. panzer division asked the stiff opposition and the allied advance could stop. 8. canadian infantry brigade from the assembly 3. canadian infantry division progressed in the area to the west of Caen. 10. June stood its battalions north of the line Caen-Bayeux in the region of Putot-en-Bessin, with one platoon in the forward position to the south of the runway in the village of Norrey-en-Bessin. 11. June attacked the brigade on the south and east towards the river Mue. On the west direction is able to occupy Rots, but the attack on the south ended in defeat in the the battle of Le Mesnil-Patry, where a battalion of the queen's own canadian rifle regiment supported by tanks of the 6. canadian armored regiment ran into the tanks 12. panzer regiment SS, which dealt the Canadians a hard lesson and forced them to retreat. The end of the month already, the canadian division had not taken any more action.

XXX. ward played into the hands of the american procedure on his right wing. This forced the Germans to retreat, which opened up roughly ten kilometers wide gap in their status. The commander of the 2. army general Dempsey it wanted to take advantage and ordered a 7. armored division, to send a reinforced brigade towards Villers-Bocage with a view to further rošíření breakthrough. Armored brigade, however, ran into German tanks of the heavy tank section of the SS 101 and in the battle for Villers-Bocage suffered a defeat. Subsequently, with effort, rebounded in Amayé-sur-Seulles German counterattack, but the situation was evaluated as the continued unsustainable and 7. armored division on the night of 15. June pulled back and should be strengthened 33. armoured brigade, which had just vyloďovala. After that he had to be attack restored. But the 19th. June hit a landing device a strong storm, which caused great damage. One of the consequences was the cancellation of plans for the continuation of the operation PERCH.
