VT-72B

The development took place in the period 1983-1987 in ZTS VVÚ Martin. The verification series was produced in 1988 and the following year began serial production, which, however, was affected by the process of conversion of military production. Vehicles manufactured before 1990 were delivered to the Czechoslovak Army (50%), and others to the states of the former Warsaw Pact, including the USSR. After 1990, the partial development of some systems continued, as well as production for export.

VT-72B aka T-72TK

Although the East German Army (NVA) was rearmed with the T-72 series tanks at virtually the same time as the CSLA (the first 35 tanks were delivered from the USSR to the GDR in 1978), it was not until the late 1980s that it became intensely interested in recovery tanks built on the same chassis. The fact that the GDR was a regular client of the Czechoslovak armaments factories in the field of recovery tanks (T-55T) and crane tanks (T-55TK), so the supplier of the new vehicles was decided in advance. By the end of the GDR's existence, only three examples of the VT-72B managed to be delivered, which received the designation T-72TK in the NVA (final assembly of all three apparently took place in June 1989). The first T-72TK was taken over by the East German Army in July 1989. After delivery to the GDR, all vehicles first went to the Central Tank Repair in Grossenhain, where minor modifications were made to them based on NVA requirements. The first tank so modified then went to the Repair Battalion 9 (Instandsetzungsbataillon 9, abbreviated IB-9) stationed in Drögeheide and subordinated to the 9th Panzer Division (9. Panzerdivision, abbreviated 9. PD). It was also the last T-72TK to reach combat service. Before modifications could be made to the other two vehicles at Grossenhain, German reunification came. All of the T-72TK were then taken over by the Bundeswehr and tested.
