Savage, William Alfred

Able Seaman William Alfred Savage
sight on a motor gunboat
winner Victoria Cross

Citation for decoration Victoria Cross -

"This Victoria Cross was awarded for great courage, experience and passion for service as a pom-pom cannon on a motor cannon
boat during the attack on St. Nazaire. Completely exposed, under enemy heavy fire, he fired at positions on the coast with cold-blooded and stable accuracy. On the way back from port, he maintained vigorous and accurate fire against the attacking enemy ships until he was killed by his cannon.
This VC was awarded not only as an award for courage and a sense of service
Able Seaman Savage, but also as an appreciation of the bravery of the crews, all the nameless who took part in the attack on St. Nazaire aboard motor ships, motor torpedo boats and motor gunboats, who bravely performed their task in fully exposed positions in the face of enemy fire at a very short distance. "

Note -

This Victoria Cross was awarded posthumously
