He was a devoted member of the Waffen-SS and a supporter of their ideology. In France, he took part in anti-guerrilla operations and took part in the execution of civilians in retaliation for the activities of resistance fighters. In June/June 1944, when he moved with the division from Montauban to the north to help German troops face the Allied invázii v Normandii, a group of insurgents kidnapped and later killed his comrade-in-arms and friend SS-Sturmbannfuhrer Helmuta Kampfeho. After a fruitless search for Kampfe, Dickmann arrived in Oradour-sur-Glane with his 3rd Company. When the soldiers did not find Kampfe here either, he gave the order to shoot all the local men, women and children to the church, which was then set on fire. The 3rd Company in Oradoure murdered 642 people, then returned to its regiment and continued on its way to Normandie. Due to the Oradour massacre, Dickmann was brought before a military court, which did not convict him. He remained the battalion commander. June 30/June 1944, during the fighting in Normandy left the shelter without a helmet and immediately afterwards he was mortally wounded by an artillery shell explosion .
