Fortress Josefov (Ball)
Fortress Josefov (Ball)
Festungstadt Josefov (Pless)

After the loss of Kladska and the majority of Silesia, annexed after three lost the silesian wars, winning Prussia, the Czechs have become the new border territories of the austrian empire. This brought the need to replace lost klodzko and the silesian fortress, which until then had protected the austrian northern border.

According to the proposals of 1763 should be built a fort either in the city of Hradec Králové or at the village Dance in Jaroměř. Plans of the two fortresses have been processed, implemented, however, was only one of them – in the years 1766-1778 was fortified in Hradec Králové.

The year 1778 the war broke out about the heritage of bavarian (1778-1779), in the course of which stopped the irruption of the prussian army, the austrian makeshift field fortifications in Jaroměř. To high expertly fortified Hradec Králové the Prussians never did it. On this basis, it was decided to implement the second fortification plan, build a fortress in Jaroměř...

In the years 1780-1791 was under almost twenty years old plans of the French major general engineer Claude-Benoit Duhamel de Querlonde (and initially also under his leadership) built at the confluence of the Metuje with Labem bastionová fortress, named originally according to the village, which due to its construction disappeared – Ball (the peripheral parts of the village have been preserved as the Old Ball and the Water Ball) and only the year 1793 renamed in honor of the late emperor Joseph II. the imperial and royal fortress town of Josefov. The fortress was built according to the rules of mezièrské engineering school and consisted of three parts:

Top of the fortress was built on a hill on the left bank of the Metuje, whose flow was in this section of the napřímen and the confluence with the (also regulated) Labem shifted by 700 metres. A fortification circuit of a length of about 3 km consisted of eight bastionů with intermediate kurtinami and many of the forward fortification elements. Behind the lines bastionů was like a second line of defence built round a block of barracks with folding roofs, and reinforced the ceilings of the upper floor, which after the collapse of the roofs could serve as a path or as a fire control stations of other artillery batteries. From the west, this part of the fortress protected by a prismatic bulwark (cornichon). The entrance to the Upper fortress allow the three gates (Jaroměřská in the north of Hradec králové in the west, the new town in the south), and one poterna (in the east).

Lower strength (north of Upper fort) was formed by two lunettes on an artificial island between Metují and Labem and a corner wall on the right bank of the Elbe, consisting of two bastions with the Crown gate, built in tie kurtině.

Fortress Brdce was built as the fieldwork corner wall (cornichon) on a hill, protecting from the north-east approach to the island part of the lower fort.

Part of the fortification complex was an extensive system of underground galleries with a total length is 42.7 km, including mine and listening of the hall, jutting out into the foreland of the fort and allowing the leadership of the strength of the war, according to the latest rules. Despite the fact it was a fortress Josefov – as well as the most "perfect" star forts from the end of the 18. century – outdated practically already in the day of its completion. The French revolution and subsequent napoleonic wars marked the emergence of mass armies, which could no longer stop and no matter how perfect a lonely fortress. This was confirmed in the austro-prussian war where the prussian army fortress Josefov bypassed and a decisive battle with the austrian field army brought in another "perfect" strength – in Hradec Králové. The logical consequence then was the decision was the existence of the fortress Josefov in 1888 formally terminated...

Church of the Ascension of the Lord

The Church of the Ascension is situated on Masaryk Square. It is an Empire style building from 1805 to 1810 and was built for the needs of the military garrison of the fortress. It is similar to the church in the Terezín Fortress. However, their location within the fortress is different. Some elements of the church's internal furnishings come from the demolished church from the extinct village of Ples. The tower, located in the axis of the presbytery, measures 54 metres.

Diskuse

A pity that the fortress could not show, how would you stand up in the fight. As well as her sister, the Terezin...Are known some cases when a similar bastionová strength was examined, in a fight?.

Hello, of the Czech bastion fortresses, paradoxically only the simplest of them - Prague - has rolled several times. Of the Moravian ones, it was Olomouc. Josefov and Terezin were too perfect to be conquered, because they came too late. They were based on the experience that fortifiers gathered in 17th and 18th century Western Europe, which is where you might want to focus your interest. He, the Vauban guy, actually made a science of it based on his own experience Smile

Of course, I have read about Prague and its siege not only by the Bavarian-French-Saxon army Smile You are right that it was the simplest fortress. If it can be called that at all.It was rather the BEST of all possible fortifications. As you state.Perhaps only Vyšehrad can be evaluated as a full-fledged citadel with good tactical and technical characteristics, especially given the rather inaccessible terrain.Vyšehrad was evaluated positively, but given its location it can be said that it was almost useless. If the opponent had chosen a different path and bypassed it Smile Otherwise, as for bastion forts like Terezin and Josefov, I have heard the opinion that their strength lay in the fact that their impregnability was supposed to deter the enemy army(they would take it for a long time and with heavy losses). This would, of course, delay them. Therefore he would have preferred to bypass the fortress. There was quite a large garrison hidden in the fortress, which was also well supplied. It would have waited long enough and then invaded the enemy army in the back...It seems to me quite clever and even logical Smile

Whatever, it's smart and logical... except that's why no sane commander would do it. Not for nothing is the history of the eighteenth century filled with lengthy sieges of "impregnable" fortresses Smile The turning point came in the nineteenth century, after the rise of mass armies. VIZ

Rovněž musí mít alespoň teoretické znalosti o dělostřelectvu a dělostřeleckém mistrovství. “

Dokonce snad ani řezník Napoleon by takový útok proti moderní a PŘIPRAVENÉ pevnosti bez důkladné ženijní přípravy nenařídil...

Neví to někdo z kolegů?

In the prussian-austrian conflict in 1866 the modern jehlovky fully felt its advantages. The austrian předovky system Lorenz should while excellent ballistic properties that the shooters did not use, but basically have been already technically outdated. The chief of staff of the German army, count Alfred von Schlieffen, said: "it Was the fight of the target against the gunners, předovky against a rapid-fire weapon, fight the whole man with the bayonet against a foolish man – a bullet." Smile Often cited statement of marshal Suvorov: "the Bullet is a fool, but the bayonet is a guy!") So I think it's clear... Very Happy.
