The regiment received its present name on 01.04.1964, when all units of the Territorial Forces were incorporated into it.

In 1973 it receives another battalion, 2/1st, when the regimental replacement is restructured. This regimental structure remains until 1999, when the Territorial Force is restructured again. Today, the regiment has two battalions, namely the 1st Mechanised Infantry and the 2/1st Light Infantry.

The 3/1st Battalion was planned as a mobilization unit, but remained only on paper. From the previous structure, one company from each battalion was reserved for it.

The regiment formed the ANZAC Battalion in 1968 with a strength of 2 companies, which deployed to Vietnam in 1968-1971. The companies were always referred to as V and w companies, being the companies of the battalion on rotation.

Currently, the battalion provides personnel to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan.

One company from the 2/1st Battalion is currently deployed with Australian forces in East Timor.
