The development of the pistol for SACM, based in Cholet, Alsace, was led by Swiss designer Charles Petter. In 1935, it was adopted by the French army. Series production began in 1936. Due to the complexity of the machining procedures, production was initially very slow. Therefore, the pistol was redesigned by MAS in 1937. After the modifications, the rear part of the breech smoothly followed the body of the pistol, the whole breech was shortened and got a more angular shape. At the same time, the shape of the grip was also changed. The original model was designated Mle.1935A and the modified Mle.1935S. The captured guns were also used by the German Army under the designation 7.65 mm P625(f).

The design of the Mle.1935 was based on the Colt-Browning M1911. The entire percussion mechanism is, like that of the Tokarev TT 1930, concentrated in the percussion body. It contains the percussion spring, the tap, the tap catch, the percussion spring rod and is removable in its entirety. A manual safety located on the left side of the bolt locks the striker. The Mle.1935 has non-adjustable, fixed sights.
