In the course of 1994, the final project for the development solution of the 98 mm mortar system was prepared, the task of which is to ensure the firepower of the units of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic at the battalion and brigade level. Its firepower and effect in the target is comparable to the established 120mm mortar PRAM / L, whose number in the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic is limited by international agreements on the number of barrels with a caliber over 100mm.

Development work on the said mortar (which is structurally fully based on the concept of 81mm mortar) received a higher priority than the development of 81mm mortar and until June in 1996, his company tests were completed. After the successful completion of tests, this mortar was in 1997, based on the decision of the Minister of Defense of the Slovak Republic, introduced into the armament of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic as 98mm M vz.97.

The mortar uses fragmentation-explosive ammunition 98 mm OF .
